Working for a Small Business

… or working for yourself. Nice piece from Seth Godin today. I have a few things to add:

  • Show that you have a track record of learning new stuff. If you have ever seriously uttered the phrase, "That's not in my job description," save yourself the time and heartache of applying to a small company.
  • Care about the business they are in. If you think it through and realize you could never get excited about plumbing supplies or real estate marketing, then save everyone's time and don't apply.
  • Learn from them starting at the first conversation. Even if they hire you out of a big fancy corporation where you had lots of fancy experience, make it clear you believe they know their business and you don't … yet.
  • Last, my favorite soap box: Start making application of the stuff you know to their business issues. It's not your MBA that may be most useful them, it's how you use what you learned running your kid's softball fundraiser and apply it to their distribution issues that will label you an indispensable business MacGyver.
